From February 11 to 17, Dubai, UAE, was transformed into a dazzling crossroads of Balkan and Carpathian soul. This enchanting week brought together the exceptional performers of two neighboring nations—Bulgaria and Romania—each captivating audiences with the soulful rhythms, vibrant traditional costumes, and timeless choreography of their homelands on the iconic stage at Dubai Festival City.

The festival commenced with a spirited opening parade, where the deep reds and whites of Bulgarian martenitsi motifs mingled with the rich blues of Romanian folklore, uniting both nations in a stunning display of friendship. From the mysterious, polyphonic mysteries of Bulgarian women’s choirs to the dizzying spins and fiery energy of Romanian călușari dancers, audiences were spellbound. The venue thundered with applause night after night, as the precision and authenticity of each act brought the ancient spirit of the Balkans to life in the heart of the modern Middle East.

The closing ceremony was a touching tribute to the power of cultural exchange, with representatives from Bulgaria and Romania receiving certificates of excellence and handcrafted commemorative gifts. Laughter and warm embraces marked the evening as artists celebrated not only their achievements but the lifelong bonds formed on stage—a bridge built across the Danube right there in Dubai.

Offstage, the groups immersed themselves in the magic of the city. They marveled at the soaring heights of the Burj Khalifa, wandered through the floral wonderland of Miracle Garden, and explored the pavilions of Global Village, finding echoes of their own rich traditions in the crafts and cultures of the world. A serene abra ride through Dubai Creek offered quiet reflection, while an exhilarating desert safari—complete with dune bashing and Bedouin-style dining under the stars—brought a new kind of adventure and camaraderie. Many also took peaceful morning walks along JBR Beach, savoring the gentle Gulf breeze and winter sunshine, their colorful folk ensembles a stark but beautiful contrast to the sparkling modern skyline.

This February edition of the festival was a heartfelt celebration of unity, tradition, and artistic brilliance—a powerful reminder that even between close neighbors, the specific steps and songs tell unique stories, yet they all speak the universal language of the heart. Long after the final note of the gaida and cimpoi faded, the spirit of Bulgaria and Romania lingered in the Dubai air, leaving everyone with cherished memories and a truly magical experience. ✨🌍
